IT in English Language Teaching

There are three major area that I reflect on the development of  IT to support teaching and learning of English in the context of the Hong Kong English curriculum:

1. The Growing Trend

With a major in English language education, my career goal is to become a devoted ESL teacher in secondary school. Teachers nowadays are facing different kinds of challenges with IT boom and we have to be keep ourselves updated with more and more IT usage in the classroom. Many schools in Hong Kong are updated with relevant information and network facilities, however, hardware is only the foundation of using IT. Teachers as facilitators have to equip themselves with IT literacy, which includes information and network security. With endeavor from both schools and teachers, IT will allow teachers to adopt different kinds of advanced pedagogy (e.g. blended learning) and provide teachers a tool to cater for learning diversities in a teacher-centered Hong Kong classroom.

2. Personal motivation and experience
I am very keen on learning and applying IT in the ESL classroom which can be seen from my learning experience during my Bachelor study. I have taken “Understand Digital Games” in previous semester and in this semester, This course provides me hands-on experience on different websites and software that facilitate learning and teaching. I am also participating workshops about Flipped Classroom and I was truly amazed by what IT can achieve when I visited in Learning and Teaching Expo 2016 recently.

3. Drawbacks and Frustration
Definitely, there is frustration when I use IT in the classroom and beyond. Once my Facebook account was stolen and one of my friends lost money because of this fraud. This alerted me on Information and network security. To my understanding, it can be as simple as the how to protect computers using anti-virus software or be as complicated as how the files in the Cloud are encrypted. Meanwhile, it may also highlight the awareness of information and network security, for instance, the necessity to protect accounts and identity theft. Since this program discusses real-world vulnerabilities and exploits, and how they apply to us in our day to day lives, it particularly fits my interest and needs.

IT in ELT eBook (Created by our group)

Reflection: Pros and cons of using ebooks

The advantage of using e-book is that students have the access to the e-book all the time and they can reply it again and again. Instead of only pictures and words, the e-book can also use animation, sounds and other interactive elements. If a teacher creates his own e-book, the content can be adjusted to suit the needs of the students.

On the other hand, the students may have problem developing their reading habits if they have less access to printed-books. Reading, including speed and comprehension, is also a skill that need to be developed.
